Having a new puppy can be a daunting task , here’s a few tips to make sure you start off correctly.
Whatever breed of puppy you have they are all different with different personalities. Remember genetics and breeding can play a big part in how your puppy will behave especially if it’s from working breeds.
Whilst every puppy is unique, there are a few things you must teach your puppy that can ease their transition to your home and starting their training off right.
BOND WITH YOUR PUPPY FROM DAY ONE
Don’t do too much too soon, it can be very tempting to start training straight away. Whilst I’m an advocate of training and it should be your number one goal. Take your time form a good bond first so the puppy knows it can trust you.
Show them you are safe, reliable and a really good tummy tickler. Always remember to reward the things that your puppy does right.
THE WORLD CAN. BE A BIG SCARY PLACE ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE A PUPPY
It’s a must to introduce your puppy to new things it doesn’t matter how many items you introduce your new puppy to, it’s the quality of the interactions that matters.
Here’s a few items you should introduce your puppy to- People, big small, young and old
- Dogs of all sizes and ages
- Cars, vans, bikes, bicycles, skateboards and all moving vehicles
- Different surfaces such as wet grass, concrete floors, sandy beaches, grates, grids, manhole covers and slippery surfaces
- Noisy machines such as washing machines and vacuum cleaners
WHY A CRATE IS YOUR PUPPYS BEST FRIEND
Start as you mean to go on, from the moment you have your pup get them used to being in their crate on their own. The crate is a great training tool and is a really important part of puppy life.
Why is it so important? if you don’t give your pup time to be by itself you’ll end up raising a puppy that has anxiety and will be anxious when you leave it on their own. The crate shows your puppy it’s a safe place and a place where it can be on its own and sleep safely.
